July - Warning - The Malts Cruise

Post by marisca »

I'm pondering over my summer schedule - if we all believe there will be a summer, there will be one - and have hit the first bummers of the year.

The Round Mull Race is a week later than usual on 6th-8th July (makes the tides vaguely sociable esp. Sound of Iona). This highly social cruise in company has been a must the last few years and I would recommend it to all. Unfortunately the 8th July is a somewhat significant wedding anniversary, but I have most surprisingly (I wonder what the quid pro quo will be?) been given dispensation to go sailing provided I get to the family holiday immediately after. Family holiday involves cultural goings-on at the Hebfest which coincides with Sail Stornoway (ex Sail Hebrides) which runs from 9th-14th July. Last year it was the early part of the week for the racing bits 'cos the Tall Ships were due and I hope it reverts to Wed-Sat this year - Nick is not geting to win anything this year if it does! So this means finish the RMR on the Sunday, dump the crew, load cruising stuff like water, beer, food, diesel, etc. and hot foot it up the Sound of Mull (LW Oban 1540) for a sleep somewhere, possibly Tobermory, then on up past the Small Isles, through the Minches, stopping as when and where it seems appropriate to get to Stornoway on the Tuesday.

Now, I have just found out the £275 per boat, £225 per person Malts Cruise logs in to Kerrera on Friday 6th July, Tobermory on 8th and be polluting the Small Isles on the Monday. Ah well, there may be a drink in it for me.

Of course, if you wish to join me - £225 might just cover your share of the boat expenses for 2 days and is, coincidently, the same amount of wedge as the HL mob charged for a similar time restricted delivery trip last week!

As a public service I offer their itinerary, so you can avoid/coincide/join(?) as you wish.

HebCeltFest coincides with Sail Hebrides. Quite the best week of the year to go to Stornoway.

While I enjoyed my time in Las Palmas and St Lucia last year I fancy the memories of our week in Stornoway will linger longer.

Nick,

When you went to the Hebfest last summer, did you got a berth in the marina and were you apply to reserve it in advance or did you have to tie up along side the harbour wall? I'm planning a return trip this summer.

Thanks

The first night we were rafted up on the harbour wall, but the next day a berth became free in the marina and we decamped to it.

It's not bad for us on the wall as we are always likely to be outside a bigger boat.

I'm sorry I mentioned it now. The place is going to be hoaching wi' refugees frae the CC.

Now there's an idea - why not a cruise in company to S'way? Meet in T'mory on eve of Sunday 9th?

We went to Gairloch for their Big Boat Day on the way this year and then sailed over in company on the Sunday. (Well, mostly with Mavanier really, as Bagheera was too fast for us and the wee Hilliard couldn't keep up).

That's clever. You posted that at 18.34 and I read it at 18.00.
