Mirror Gaff and Boom

Post by ubergeekian »

I'm in need of a gaff and boom for a Mirror. Scruffy is absolutely fine, rotten I have already.

Only got a mast and gaff, no boom.

If you want it I'll be @ Kip / Cumbre for the SB quiz but not going over to Tarbert.

But she's loose footed, almost any stick of firewood will do as a boom. Just take the fittings off the old one & swop 'em over.

Yee-hah. Excellent. PM sent.

In case anyone cares, I've just rescued a Ferranti Boat dinghy from a local farmyard. The hull and alloy mast are fine but the gaff and boom (it uses a Mirror rig with blue sails) have been lying outside for several years and are a bit nasty.

That was a different but related Ferranti. The boats were made by Denis Ferranti in Bangor (Wales). Their normal business is meters and other electromechanical stuff, and I don't know how they got into boat manufacture. I one I have is a pleasant wee thing, though I don't yet know how it'll sail. I can remember seeing them in Clyde Chandlers on Great Western Road as a child and failing to persuade my father to buy me one.

But a stick of four by two-ish (not a religous reference) from B&Q will still make you a boom. look forward to pics of you sailing her in due course.

New gaff collected at Cumbrae Watersports Centre on Friday evening. Many thanks to Bob for his generous help. With a bit of luck I'll have the thing sailing in a week or two ...

The boat died when the trailer punched a hole in the bottom @ the W/E, I now have everything but a hull spare :(

Not hard to fix that up if you want to, either with a shingle temporarily, or by replacing a bottom panel.

I was taking the boat to try to dry it out in a garage because the gunnel is coming away from the hull. It's a common problem caused by keeping the hull upside down, it's where water collects. I had to repair the bottom 2 years ago, basicaly the hull is rotten all over.

I'm looking at this outfit:

It would be nice to support a charity and get a boat too.

Yeah, I like them too. I'd rather have done that than the bike project I set up, but dinghies are a bit scarcer in the Midlands. :D

If you are happy with the Mirror, they will repair it for you.

I fancied getting something like an Enterprise off them, but I already have a Minisail, a Laser, a small sailing tender & a Solo so I don't think Linda will let me get any more. I really ought to sell some I suppose, but have never got round to it.

Well there's an idea. The chap asked what I was doing with Ruddy when I emailed him to see if the boat list was up to date. I was thinking of giving it to him when I bought another but if they can repair it that's another option.

My first mirror was in the local paper in exactly that state. My dad patched it with my Brother and I, errr, helping, and it gave us bags of fun. It was the first boat we raced.
