Anchoring advice

Post by Silkie »

I was fortunate recently to receive some free and unsolicited anchoring advice from an officer of the grey funnel line.

It seems that he could tell that I didn't have enough scope out (perhaps some sophisticated underwater radar?) and furthermore that I was probably in the wrong spot altogether. Being quite happy with my arrangements however I decided not to act on his recommendations on this occasion. Still, it's good to know that he had my best interests at heart despite being so busy with the defence of the realm.

That was very helpful of him. Were you, by any chance, in the vicinity of Kyle Akin?

Well Bill it's a long story and probably best related over a couple of drams in a quiet anchorage. I suspect that the lieutenant in question was somewhat put out at having to shift his berth to accommodate a yacht requiring fuel and I just happened to be the next wafi to appear in his crosshairs.

It was hard to see how I could possibly have been in his way since he'd just put his boat into her new berth despite my presence (and getting out looked to be much easier) but ignoring my assurance that we would be long gone before he started his trips round the bay in the morning and regardless of the fact that we were anchored precisely where the habourmaster had indicated he persisted in trying to persuade me that I didn't know what I was doing and would be better off somewhere else entirely.

Things went from bad to worse when he subsequently butted in to a conversation on another channel between myself and a grumpy old git of my acquaintance in order to justify himself. It was perhaps unfortunate that the gogoma was casting nasturtiums on the officer's character, manners and seamanship at the time but those who listen at keyholes rarely hear good of themselves.

I've never previously experienced anything less than perfect courtesy from our jolly jack tars. All in all it was a most surprising event and felt remarkably like being bullied.

Thanks for that, unusual as you say.
Perhaps it's the same guy who came crashing under the Skye bridge a couple of years ago complete with rooster tail (on a big grey thing!!) and nearly wrecked everything moored in Kyles eakin and Lochalsh. He did apologise and adjust his speed when advised though.

Now, was that a bleat I heard?
