a "turn" after dinner

Post by sarabande »

devoid as I am of musical ability, talent, or even bravado, can anyone suggest what might be acceptable as a "turn" after dinner at an approaching private dinner in Scotland, please ?

A recital of The Boy stood on the Burning Deck ? A selection of verses from Omar Kayham ? A monologue from Machiavelli? A recitation of ColRegs ?

I know - it ain't what you do it's the way that you do it.....

McGonigall's poems always go down well. Something like the Tay Bridge disaster http://www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk/poe ... saster.htm

If it's something like a wedding anniversary or where you know the people personally then a speech littered with anecdotes usually goes down well.
Penty of help online if you google speeches.

A burst of Jerusalem goes down a treat in Scotland
You could try a bit of Lallans

Fin miggers drawers din clacket gain
and Patsy Maygin shot the ranks,
'Tis soapy Salle wham chaps the keech
From aff the cheeky sheels red shanks.

Sine lookit , here comes Jock the Plue,
Gin fits he humping ben yon pass,
Tis muckles patch for miggers kilt,
From oot of which has drapped the arse.
