But, I fail to see why I should comply with Red X. Who are they anyway?

Redex is a fuel additive. I can't say I approve of motorway signs being used for advertising.

I have a very old tatty lifejacket - apparently the only type that is useful according to the Coastguard.

There are places, like the Mersey Tunnels & the Aston Expressway where ignoring the Red x is as likely to cost you your life as a fine. Contra-flows are a wonderful thing when they work well. But I can see why Gaelic Rurals might choose to struggle to read Saesenach signs. On your own heads be it.
