Drop keel on a mooring
Serious post - unusual for me
I'm just about to launch our Gem Micro on windermere
It's 20 years since was up there and I can't remember whether to leave the keel up or down when she is on the mooring
She won't swing around so much if it's down but if we get weed growth on the keel it's really hard to clean it once she is back on her trolley
What does the panel think?

Re: Drop keel on a mooring
This is Chiron's third season on Windermere and she just has a bit of fuzz on her bottom.
She is antifouled but it's not really required on the lake.
I have just scrubbed round the waterline and she will be OK for another few months.
I'm going to leave Carousel's keel down when she goes on the lake. If there is enough water at the mooring I would leave yours down.
I'm going to have a bit of a problem getting the barnacles off Carousel's keel on the trailer, we managed to clean the hull quite well with a rope from the mast head to lean her and the deck brush but couldn't get at the keel. I think a dip in the water with a scraper is going to be easier than dismantling all the keel box trim in the boat.

Where is the mooring?

Waterhead, close to the pub
It's about as close as we can get to where we keep the dingy on a bit of land between the pub and Borans park. See you about perhaps. What's the boat called?

Attach a rope/chain to the keel and drop it. Bet you're thinking what shyte's this?claymore wrote:I can't remember whether to leave the keel up or down when she is on the mooring

Well, fer once, this is serious. The keel's got a couple of bits sticking oot and it's the best anchor ever; better than this rocna stuff. You don't need a mooring .. you jist make yer own.
Jist reverse the procedure when youse aff fer a sail

Re: Drop keel on a mooring
I'm sure I've heard of boats on moorings with their keels lifted being more likely to cowp over in strong winds.
Re: Drop keel on a mooring
Maybe that's why Para 's recommending dropping the drop keel rather than lifting the drop keel?Shard wrote:I'm sure I've heard of boats on moorings with their keels lifted being more likely to cowp over in strong winds.
Which brings up a question that has troubled me greatly, what's the difference between a lift keel and a drop keel?

ye shid try yon incontinence pants, mon
Re: Drop keel on a mooring
as a drogue, yer suggestion is accepted but, mind, wi' some reluctance as the project is in an advanced stage and we're fear't orra any further complication likely tae befuddle the auld goat.jim.r wrote:ye shid try yon incontinence pants, mon
In fact, thur wus a wee bit orra problem in that when the keel descended it tended tae flip ower but these pair orra yer pants will hold the thing up .. so tae speak.

Re: Drop keel on a mooring
I leave my Hunter 490 on Loch Ken with the keel lowered. Neither it nor the hull gets more than a very slight sliming. Keeping it down is well worth it for the extra stability when I climb aboard.claymore wrote:Serious post - unusual for me
