Stornoway - Sail Hebrides Marine Festival - 9th - 16th July

Post by Nick »

.
Anyone know what the berthing situation is likely to be like? We got a berth in the marina last time we were there (2003) but the website isn't very encouraging for this year:
If bringing your own boat, there is mooring along side the harbour wall and if you are really early or lucky there may be space in the marina.

Come to our marine festival, but not if you have a boat

I was in Stornoway last summer for the music festival which coincided with the boat festival.

I rafted up alongside a quay on the way in. There were other yachts on the fish pier further in. The marina itself seemed fairly full. Not much in the way of "facilities"

Shame - I thought in the eight years since we were last there they might have got their act together. Overall I am not sure now - this year doesn't sound very welcoming, with very few 'events' - might just call in for a night on the razzle at HebCeltFest and leave it at that. I have tried to get in touch with Rob Whelton (Vega owner of that parish) to see if he has any inside info, but no joy so far. We are embarking tomorrow afternoon, heading Skyewards initially I think - but we might change our minds if we get a better offer.

Good luck heading Skyewards.

In the rain and cold that was Stornoway last summer I decided I wanted to go somewhere warmer this year so at mid-day on Saturday I hope to catch the tide through the sea lock at Bowling then off down to Devon and Cornwall. The sun must shine there.

Then back up the Engerlish Channel and the North Sea to Tramtown

Good luck and bon voyage. Slightly jealous.

Our original plan this year was to deliver the boat to Cornwall in May then in June embark for S. Brittany. As so often happens plan is just an anagram of nalp, and equally meaningless. We now have a firm destination for tomorrow - the Wide Mouthed Frog at Dunstaffange, where we are hoping to indulge in some merriment with a forumite of this parish. After that the Minch is our oyster.
