Ardrossan

Post by cerro1973 »

Are you allowed to anchor behind the breakwater at Ardrossan or not, because of the Ferry. The CCC says yes, but the ferry and clyde marina says no. comments would be appreciated

last night I was shattered after spending 4 hours beating back from Lamlash on my own with the wind right on the nose and I never even thought about it so just pasted the link.

"I've never seen anyone anchor there and would have thought that it was all under control of the harbour which is Clydeport Authority. Although where you were anchored would not have caused a problem I expect they wouldn't want to see it full of boats.
I suppose if the ferry had a problem and both engines conked out it could drift right over you. I know when the ferry is leaving and arriving the crew always prepare the anchors for release in case of such a problem.
The marina handbook states that the outer basin has to be cleared when the tower is showing 2 red lights. This is the case when the ferry is coming or going. So I would say the Clyde Pilot is wrong".

I did see a boat anchored behind Horse Island once but I wouldn't.

.
Wasn't a criticism Ian, just wondering.

Why would anyone want to anchor behind the breakwater at Ardrossan? It's hardly the prettiest place on the Clyde, and if you need shelter that badly then the marina seems the obvious choice.

Och, weeeel, they were no havin' a sale tho were they?

Anchoring is free, marinas cost £10 a night - perhaps even more these days.

Didn't think it was Nick. I've seen criticism and it didn't look like that.

I think if you read the other post he didn't want to pay for berthing, I wouldn't have thought it wasn't too much to add to the price of a sprayhood.
He could have tried Saltcoats Harbour.

I was haveing the sprayhood fittings that meant three fittings approx 15 min each and the marina very kindly said I could come in for the fittings as long as I went strait out after each fitting I was going across to Brodick but there was no wind so I anchored behind the breakwater till next morning. Haveing come from Dover with the boat in April and paid £24.20 at Brighton £22.00 at Brixam £20.00 at Ardglass I thought £27.20 was a bit expensive for Ardrossan. And £81.60 on top of the hood?

Daily rates do seem a bit expensive but you can get short stay up to 4 hrs for £9.40
