BRITISH ANTI-FOUL SCOOPS ECO AWARD AT INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Aquarius Marine Coatings, the Dorset based company that manufacture and distribute Coppercoat, the world’s most long lasting anti-foul coating, have won the prestigious ‘Eco Friendly Business’ category of the Asian Marine & Boating Awards 2011, held in conjunction with the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show.

The award was presented to Nigel MacFarlane (Coppercoat representative for Hong Kong) by Yang Xin Fa (Secretary General of the Chinese Boatbuilding Association) at a gala dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Shanghai.

Jayson Kenny, Director of Aquarius Marine Coatings said “It is very rare for any anti-foul to receive an award for being environmentally friendly, so this is a major coup for us and welcome recognition that Coppercoat is an environmentally sensible choice.”

By commonly remaining effective for between 10 to 20 years, anti-fouling a boat once with low-leaching Coppercoat is clearly far more responsible than re-anti-fouling every year with a standard eroding anti-foul paint. And you don't have 10 to 20 years worth of painting apparel such as rollers, brushes, tins and plastic paints trays to bury in a landfill site either!

Developed in the 1980’s and available to the public since 1991, Coppercoat is possibly the most powerful and long lasting anti-fouling available to the modern yachtsman. This hard wearing densely copper filled epoxy resin is successfully protecting tens of thousands of boats the world over, saving their owners the time and expense of annual re-antifouling. Seems a bit harsh to judge a country for somethuing it hasn't done yet. Beijing may still be shrouded in smog right now but China is set to become a world leader in green energy.

Already is. China already heads the G20 table of countries investing in renewable energy, pushing the US and UK into second and third place. An increasing volume of renewable energy patents is being developed in China, partly because of the huge proportion of their post-2008 stimulus package that was directed specifically in that direction.

This sheds some interesting light on China's long term plans, and how they intend to deal with their growing labour shortage (reserve pools of labour becoming exhausted, huge age and gender imbalances developing as a consequence of the one child policy). Rather than be the new workshop or sweatshop of the world, China clearly intends to be the global IP engine. Even now, low skill manufacturing work is being exported to countries with cheaper labour such as VietNam.

Without wishing to start a global warming debate, it is pretty clear that China does take seriously the problems arising from carbon emissions. They will still build coal fired power stations as a quick fix, but the investment in renewable is staggering. They argue that they need the quick fix to catch up with 200 years of industrialisation in the west, and also because we in the west have effectively exported our manufacturing carbon emissions to China.

And WTF do they do when the wind doesn't blow??

I'm sorry, but I still think wind power is feckin' stoopid technology. Hydro/Tidal is the only SUSTAINABLE way to go. The Dee/Don/Deveron Etc haven't dried up yet, and the tide comes in/goes out twice a day with monotonus regularity. They even publish tables of when you can expect it to happen!

I was thinking that too. I think, but can't back up, that they are producing carbon because they are making so much stuff (some would say rubbish stuff) for us, so can they justify offloading some of their carbon load on to the West?

Yes; put it this way, the UK has got one of the most stringent carbon reduction programmes in the world, and has, so far, a reasonably good track record in carbon emission limitation. But that is solely a measure of carbon produced in production (of goods, energy, services etc), not in terms of consumption, which, arguably, should include our imported manufactured goods. In other words, through our decline as a manufacturing society, we have simply exported our carbon footprint to China, not the other way around.
