I zapped him earlier but how did he get on in the first place? Also he was one of the dozen or so I dealt with over the weekend but none of them had got further than waiting for approval.

.
From bounced activation emails I can tell that there are currently over 100 attempted spam sign-ups to this board per day.

The registration antibot function was set to use ReCaptcha Image, which it would seem has been thoroughly conquered by the spambots.

It has now been set back to Question and Answer, which seems to still be the way to go. New user registration seems to also be working but failed on one occasion. There are reports of some spammers bypassing that. There is still another weapon at our disposal - custom registration fields - but it takes some time to set up and is not always effective. I think few of you have any idea how sophisticated the spammers now are. For all you know your own computer is part of a botnet that is attempting some of these registrations. Given the resources at our disposal (me and Silkie) I think we do rather well. I reckon taking Amazon, Google and paid advertisng into account I probably make two pounds fifty an hour for the time I spend working on BM. Silkie of course makes less, so buy him a drink next time you see him.

My hotmail account has certainly been compromised several times. On one occasion I spammed all my contacts and some of you here were on the receiving end. Most recently I found I was getting dozens of postmaster@ replies about undeliverable emails though there was no sign of the outgoing ones in my sentbox. Changing my password seems to cure it each time but I'm dismayed that it is such a frequent occurrence.
