Ah come on! Gie Lydia a break. The poor lass is in her final year of architecture studies before being forced out into the big bad world and seems to think Lighthouses are romantic, artistic edifices of little practical use. Now, in a brilliant Fred Rift she has been transported onto HMS Hood with clean underwear. Can you no tell her how much your emotions are uplifted by the sight of a snowy white phallus rising over the foamy main, or something?

Sorry guys, and Lydia. It (Hood) seemed interesting at the time. I should have just stayed on the subject of the Stevensons and Bass rock I suppose. Wrong side of the country for me, I'm afraid.

There are many retired lighthouses that still offer the opportunity to take a bearing & define your position accurately to confirm your electronics (if you have any eloectronics working).

They are often in amazing sites, cliff tops (or bases like Beachy Head to stay below the cloud base) on lonely islands & isolated rocks. Their location is key to their emotive appeal (just remember - Location, Location, Location)
