Is the UK too POSH now? (place mats)

For years I have been searching for some cheap vinyl place mats for everyday use on the boat.

Cloth mats are very nice at home, or occasionally on board, but as we don't have an automatic washing machine in the galley, they quickly become horrible on board.

Does anyone know of a supplier... I even tried mother care, ha! obviously babies in the uk are using cloth and silver cutlery.

We had the same problem, but were only thinking about mats-for-boats when cruising, so were limited to the tat from the giftshops in the various places we visited.
I suspect she went and got some totally inappropriate, that are still in the port locker - unused.
maybe we didn't "need" them at all.

Agreed, they only appear to be special purpose now, I found one cottage company on-line, who printed your family photo's onto the mats.. just what you need at dinner.. and at £10+ a mat, no thanky very much.

It used to be, cloth and woven mats demanded a premium, now it really does appear that we are too posh to cope with them. We actually have one set, bought for us, they would be fine but for the Santa and Rudolf images on them lol. I should have added, I would not enjoy spending over £5 on a set of 4 plain mats.

Am I asking too much.

just one thing, anyone know what Polypropylene plastic is, is this the floppy material or a more stiff type? I want the old fashioned floppy type for the mats, must also be non-slip as the table has a habit of moving when the boat does..

At £1.99 for four I expect they'll be fairly flaccid. I'd offer to check them out for you tomorrow but I'm now off for the weekend.

Me mum uses that non-skid lattice work stuff, even in Tarbert, it's not exactly wipe clean but it is non-adsorbent so the spilt wine is easy to get off. Come to think about it, she has some well worn place mats for the plates too so I'll shut up now. The bread board keeps the tea pot off the table.

What is wrong with buying some scoot mat and cutting to size and making nice scalopped edges. Just pop them in the sink when doing the washing up and they are clean again. Peg them on the guard wire and they will be dry in no time. Kip Chadlery normally sell by metre off a huge roll.

Sliced Sausage's place mats are really nice, I have had pleasure of using them many times but Mrs Sliced Sausage would have a fit if they were put in the washing up!!!

Very nice, although at 50 quid for four they don't quite meet Jules' criterion regarding a fiver for four being too dear!
