Knots, bends, hitches and ropework

Just a minute while I zip up my anorak and get my flask out.

I'm on the lookout for a good knot book. I was in the Scouts so I know the obvious ones, I'm interested in some obscure rope work instructions.

I saw a RYA knot book at the W/E but apart from a Monkeys Fist and Baggywrinkles it all seemed fairly mainstream.

I would particularly like to splice some octoplait, maybe have a try at things like the Monkeys Fist, and learn some more boaty knots.

Any recomendations?

has a fair selection of Knot Tying books.

Ashley's Book of Knots is dead good - not from personal experience you understand - I have people to tie knots for me

Ashley's is good. Geoffrey Budworth is another name to look out for.

I warn you, once you go in there, nothing more will be seen of you. One guy tied a lifesized model of the Titanic, dontcha know? Water got in and it sank.

I can do a turk's head, some crown chaining and rudimentary bell ropes. My cousin, ah, well that would be telling......
