Weather School Musing...Fronts & Satellite Picture

Post by weatherman »

Hi,

An interesting satellite picture this morning, which clearly shows the frontal structure within the cloud.

I’ve attached the picture below, and it clearly shows the relationship between the cloud patterns and fronts.

Just thought it was a good example to see how fronts relate to the real world!

Best wishes,
Simon

very satisfying pic, thanks. It's always good to see the correlation.

One quick Q.

The cloud behind the advancing Cold Front over Germany stops very quickly after the front, but the cloud behind the Cold Front to the W of Ireland seems to linger on a bit after the front has passed. Is this due to a difference in the temp of the air masses pls, or something far more exotic ? Speed of progress perhaps ? Gradient of slope ?

Hi,

Pleased you like it.

yes, it is down to the temperature gradient on the front, it also reveals a lot about how active the fron is. The sharper the edge, the heavier the rain and stronger the wind gusts are likely to be.

Good innit????
