Just had a look.
Some pretty unpleasant stuff, seems the locals are agin the new pontoon. Are people who live in Oban against progress or are they just anti-yachtie?
IMHO the pontoon is an excellent idea and I can see no downside.

IMHO the pontoon is an excellent idea and I can see no downside.

It is worth noting that the vocal local actually resides in Canada.

Interestingly I see that a few months down the line the Crimson Vicar has somehow managed to persuade the worthies who run the OT forum to remove some of his more outlandish anti-yachtie posts (although strangely enough no action was taken when I originally complained to the OT about the posts). In the interests of preserving the historical record I have reproduced a couple of them here:

I would guess the majority of Obanites are quite pleased that permission for yet another 70 berths has been refused. Most don't want Oban turned into some yachtie holiday home. We can gain enough employment from traditional tourism and not have to be overwhelmed by the captain pugwash brigade and their middle class ways.

Are the further 70 berths in Dunstaffnage actually going to benefit OBAN ?
The Marina will benefit, the chandlery, The Frog...but Oban, no. I doubt if any yachties who stop at Dunstafnage actually bother to come into Oban and spend at our restaurants, bars, shops etc except to restock their G&T's at Tescos.
I grant that there actually may be a case for creating a yachtie ghetto midway between Oban and Connel to save those two communities from hordes of pugwashes blocking our streets in their yellow designer booties.
Another 70 berths in Dunstaffnage Bay? Stop eating the shellfish then...how many tons of human excrement is going to be pumped out of these boats directly into our waters?

Well, it's a few years since I was in that neck of the woods, but I certainly used the Oban shops. Not a lot of shopping available in Dunstaffnage anyway other than the odd daily bits & bobs. And I can heartly recommend the hot smoked salmon butties from the kiosk by the ferry terminal - if there are any left by the time you get there.

We made a special trip to Oban to shop when we were round there last year. First time through Cuan Sound was interesting. I still have the Tilley substitute I got from Tesco (£7) but the food and booze didn't get chance to go off before we ate it.

We wandered down to Pullers for the night and had a walk to the T-n-T. Nick was "off on his holls" so we just had a couple, knicked his card from the notice board, and went back to Seminole before it got too dark.

I recon Oban probably does better out of the boating fraternity than some vicars would like to admit.

We used the local bus between Oban and dunstaffnage several times during our stay this year. Got to find somewhere to eat.....!

I have been concerned for some time now about what I consider to be a shallowing of the blue moment gene pool. Obviously this also a concern of the webmeister as we are all monsters of his creation. You must understand that none of us are real people - merely virtual beings. Take ParaHandy or Silkie for example - no God would have done that. I think Nick has the interests of all at heart in quoting from other faloriums. Technically, cross-pollination with a clear goal of improving the way we all operate.
