Signing-Off

Post by Aja »

In another forum which I subscribe to a number of the forumites sign their posts, admitedly I do too, but they use 'Kindest'. What does this mean? Is it not just a bit pretentious? Has anyone got a gag smiley? :puke:

I use Kind regards when communicating at work with someone who I think really needs stuffing with the blunt end of a rag-mans trumpet.

I usually think that kindest and similar straplines are steeped in the facetious, often written by someone who should be steeped in faeces

Having spent 10 years in a very small company (where all communication was verbal unless someone was being sacked) in between working for a medium-sized enterprise and my current very large one I have encountered great difficulty in adapting to modern business communications.

When I left the medium-sized business a memo was something I dictated to my secretary which she typed, photocopied and posted out in grubby multi-use envelopes after I had signed them under a terse Regards. As an important person I probably sent 4 or 5 a day as well as a similar number of letters to clients and suppliers in which I was always either Sincere or Faithful.

Nowadays, as a very small fish in a global pond I probably send a similar number and receive between 20 and 30 on a quiet day. Most of these start Hi or Hej and end Cheers or Have a good one or br (which I take to mean Best Regards although it could be Swenglish for Away an take a flying feck tae yersel) and I have had great difficulty in deciding on a suitable format for my own missives.

I'm right in the swing of it now though and try to use as many different ones as I can dream up. Today I managed to end an email with

Yippee,

Dave

I use "yours in anticipation" until the rabbit is safely in the bag.
I may then use "result!" if confirming/thanking good service.
