Thrash the parents
The 'graduates' of today are reputed to be crap at the three Rs nowadays
It seems the legendary Scottish education is at an all time low, and parents,
who should have taught their children to speak before sending them to school, are incompetent.
The next generation of Industrialists, MPs, Financial gurus, academics etc. can't speak either.
Why don't they repeat a year until they are ready to progress to the next level, as we used to?
How on Earth are they going to earn enough to pay my pension?

Maybe if the media stopped interviewing people who can't speak properly, poor grammar and diction would not be deemed so acceptable. (or perhaps, humiliating subtitles could be added)
One can have a regional accent without destroying the language.

Funnily enough, the representative of the recruiting company was distinctly Eastern European and was hardly a great exponent of the Queens English.

What I am unable to comprehend is why the yoof of today want to and indeed are permitted to speak with a mixture of West Indian and Greek Cypriot pidgin English. Ya know init!
I would have been thrashed both at home and at school for pispronunciation, and that never did me any harm.

In our small rural primary school in the '50s, we had an older teacher who, in response to a childs'
answer in the venacular, would simply say "now Tom, how do we say that in school" As a result,
most of the kids left there Bi-lingual - out side anything goes, in school it was perfectly good, if
heavily accented English.

My eldest son went through a BRIEF phase of dressing in basketball shorts and vest and listening to "so called" R&B music.
I found the most effective remedy for this was to give him plenty of menial tasks (washing car, kitchen floor, cutting grass...) for little or no reward.

When he enquired as to why I was giving him so many jobs to do , I explained that if he wished to dress and act like "one of our non-reflective cousins", then I was only too happy to respect his right to do so and would therefore treat him as one...... Soon sorted that one out.

Should of told them to shut up and get the dishes done.......... Apparently it is only acceptable to use the N-word if you yourself happen to be a "person of colour", in which case it is seen as a compliment and expression of coolness.
Does this mean that white people are being racially discriminated against?

I find this an entirely fascinating subject. What I really think is going on is that in a nation with greater mobility our language is in some way being diluted and corrupted. For example - the Fylde where I work is a predominantly rural area, there are lots of villages and agriculture was the major industry. People grew up in villages, were educated there, worked there and lived there and so preserved not only the village but the language of that village.
Now we have less agriculture and people travelling greater distances to work Around here a pure Pilling dialect is difficult to understand and is definately not cool in Blackpool within the student community, for example - and so the dialect is lost as a trade off to and safety within a wider community.
Sad really as we lose identity and take on some strange afro-blackpoolian, londonian jumbled up annoying people muddle of a way of speaking.

The preservation of distinctive dialects is quite important really - I think we have wised up to the fact that rural dialect has disappeared and all sorts of preservation societies, normally inhabited by morris dancers, have sprung up. Perhaps now we are facing serious threats to urban dialect?

It was a term my mother used to use regularly. Any idea what the origin of it is?
Another was "Do you think I came up the Clyde in a banana boat" Is that another that will be offensive to anyone who did come up the Clyde on said boat?

couple of years ago I was explaining a work situation to a nigerian colleague and I introduced a drawback by saying without thinking "and the nigger in the woodpile is ... " everyone else was horrified but she did'nt even notice and started giggling when it was pointed out .. she was'nt offended cos she knew me and knew no offence was intended.

Words are only a part of the communication process, non vebal matters more.
