Shearwater may be popping out of the Crinan Canal on Fri evening if everything goes to plan. I tried to buy Tidal stream Atlas NP218 today but Kip, Largs and Ardrossan didn't have it. I only have one for the Clyde and MOK but it only goes as far north as Gigha. We don't have any definite plans but may head North a bit from Crinal. Can anyone tell me about the tides in the Sound of Jura? What direction do they run and at what times compared to Dover.
Thanks Ian

Assuming you are thinking of heading North:
Dorus Mor: NW (flood) starts -2:00 to -2:30 LW Oban, SE ( ebb) starts -2:00 to -2:15 HW Oban
Next Friday HW Oban is 14.41 LW 21.03 - Neaps
So - you should be able to catch the tide through the Dorus Mor and up the Sound of Luing any time after about 7pm

To my mind the rates in NP218 and to a lesser extent the directions and timings are a work of fiction. That nice Mr Lawrence and/or the CCC give data that seem to better match my reality. So congratulations on saving a £ or 5.

Some time ago I published Claymore's definitive tide table which covered Dorus Mor and Cuan
Naturally I've lost it but a clever person like Silkie will know where to find it

. . . but I think you might want to revise the Sound of Luing entry to include the North-going and South-going streams as well!
