danfoley wrote:Hi all,

On Monday the YBW forums were subjected to a spam attack, containing highly undesirable material. I will reiterate that this was not a hack of the site and that all your personal details are safe.

As a result of the attack, we tightened security on the forums to prevent a repeat while we reviewed our site security. Having done this, we have taken the decision to move the forums on to a new platform that will provide maximum security for all our users.

As well as affording us the greatest possible security, the new platform will improve the forums from a usability perspective. Yes, it will even have a fully functioning search engine!

In order to facilitate the move and protect against more attacks in the interim period, we have had to make all the forums, except for The Lounge, “read only”. This means you will not be able to post anywhere but The Lounge until the project is complete, but we are drafting in additional technical resource to do this as quickly as possible, and so we estimate that posting on the forums will not be available for a number of days only.

We will keep The Lounge open in order to maintain some continuity during this period. You will also still be able to send private messages. However, please be aware that any posts made or personal messages sent made between now and the launch of the new forum will be lost. Your forum post count will continue to rise if you post during this period, but will return to the count as of 18:30 today (Wed 8 July) after we re-launch.

The forums will be visibly different when they are re-launched. However, as we are moving quickly we will not be able to go through a traditional ‘beta’ testing stage, where we would normally get your feedback before switching over.

We will try and keep the layout and style of the forums as close as possible to the current site (including user IDs and posts) and will welcome your feedback when we re-launch, but our priority is to get the forums moved as soon as possible.

I am very grateful for the goodwill and generous support many of you have shown this week, and I’m sure you can appreciate this is being done in the best interests of the forum, to protect it and it’s users, keeping a great boating site where people can freely and safely discuss their boating passions.

The silver lining of these problems is that we are going to have an even better forum sooner than we expected!

Thanks for your patience, I will update you on how we are progressing over the next few days. If you have any questions please e-mail me at dan_foley@ipcmedia.com.

OK it was only in Website News and Feedback but I bet it gets a significantly higher than average number of views now that there will be no new posts for a while.

Naw, the only working YBW forum (the lounge) is almost dead while the remaining YBW forums are dead.

Hi Cliff,

Deperate Dan Foley says the new forums will be up within two days . . .

There certainly hasn't been a mad rush to BlueMoment, but then do we want one?
