Re: YBW
I did hear that they had an attack of some form of nasties, but I'm not sure of the details.
I believe that there was porn involved, so probably the techies are "Looking into it" as we speak.
Bu99ers took the site down before I got a look. Harrumph!

Hi, Nick - jhr here, from the Other Place.
I was online when it happened, yesterday evening. I am extremely broad-minded but it was not so much porn as sickening filth - quite indescribable. Even in the few minutes I was on, there were multiple posters putting up pictures, so I think it must have been either a co-ordinated onslaught by people with a grudge (which seems unlikely) or some kind of bot-type assault, trying to overwhelm YBW. If so, they obviously succeeded.
My guess is that the IPC techies are (a) trying to make sure that they've completely cleaned up the website and (b) trying to make sure that this can't happen again, before they go live again.
It really was quite vile and at least one Forumite posted that his children had been looking at his screen when he opened up a post - I'm glad mine didn't see anything.
Aaargh, forced to sign up to yet another boaty forum in order to answer your question......

Re: YBW
.
Thanks JHR - yes, sounds like a bot. I guess someone had to go to the trouble of preparing all the foul posts though.
We had a particularly unsavoury character on here once who threatened me with bots and his 'best SQL injections' among other things. I am pretty sure he also has an identity on YBW.
I am afraid I turn into one of the shootemfloggem brigade when it comes to hackers - I'm going to have to shut Yotblog down because it has security issues I cannot resolve. I hope IPC find out whodunit and inform the police.

Re: YBW
I can only agree with what James, jhr, has written. I also had the misfortune, as had Mme S, to be online to Scuttlebutt when it happened. Quite clearly a systematic attempt by, perhaps one individual, perhaps others, to destroy a very successful website.
Forbye the detail of the nature of the attack, which was pure unimaginable filth, the incident does, ironically, show the value of trying to maintain an open and free society. Within seconds, or at most minutes, of the attack, people of the forum community made their protests known, and YBW reacted as promptly as might be expected by closing down the forum for a period.
The shock of those images were deeply upsetting to many people; in some ways, the effect of the images were not dissimilar to suffering a mild physical attack by bampots - mental shock, rather than physical damage.
Anyway, well done to YBW for closing down the site and sorting out the problem.
There is always a question of balance in how to mitigate risk, but I do hope that YBW will still support the right of members to make posts without fear over-heavy moderation. The system has worked well, and I see no reason to give way to e-thuggery.
