If aliens are monitoring us from outer space...
...they will know CW's voice. Heard as we shot through the Dorus Mor at Saturday lunchtime:
"Rothesay Harbour, Rothesay Harbour, Rothesay Harbour this is Hummingbird, Hummingbird, Hummingbird,"
Must be a good VHF!

How many times do I have to tell you all, it wasent my HH but Steve's, one of the latest new forumites here.Shard wrote:Perhaps that was him shouting in lieu of the missing H/H.
I only asked Nick to put out the word incase anyone found it.
As for sat, the harbour master must have been in for a looooooong c**p as he hadent answered for many repeated calls.
Now Danny I told you its not my radio at fault must be yours!

Eamonn as I said you were coming in loud and clear all over the Clyde as most boats will confirm but Dorus Mor find hard to believe.
I once was at Wemyss Bay pier speaking with another boat which was entering Tarbert Loch Fyne about 17 nautical miles as radio signals fly and was a clear as a bell but 25 nautical miles to the Dorus Mor seems stretching it.
We do always seem to thing being round the west is far from the Clyde but it is the sticky out pieces of land and islands which make the long journeys.

Re: If aliens are monitoring us from outer space...
There is a phenomenon called 'skip' which affects vhf frequencies. 'Especially noticable during periods of high pressure. On the way to the boat on thursday I was unable to tune into Radio 2 on the car radio but was getting a Spanish radio station loud and clear on FM.
Skip I have been reliably told was/is used by radio hammers to bounce signals long distances - and I mean '000s of miles. Used to use it too in the old CB days, so Clyde to Dorus Mhor not that unusual.

I regurlarly hear Donegal bay on the radio, also Forth and Tay.
Btw its only a cheepo radio nothing special.
Good to know it is working ok though, but in saying that last I couldent reach CCG from Fairlie bay, just goes to show.

Cue the next BM competition "What was Claymore's CB handle (Claymore not eligible to enter)"

Hmm. I'll kick it off:

Screw your eyes up real tight and squint and you can see where I'm coming from....
