No, I never got round to it. I'm presently getting through a fair bit of Bowmore which is currently about £21 a litre at the airport (buying 2).

Re: The Hijacked Thread
£21 a litre !! - well priced at that.
the first mate returned from sainsbury`s this morning with a bottle of "the singleton " which i think she said was on special offer at £21 ( £6 off, allegedly ).
she said there was a dearth of their own brand malts on the shelves.
i`m looking more closely at the bottle just now and see that it is "the singleton" of dufftown - not of auchroisk (sic?) as i had assumed. i shall have to make enquiries about this. the address of the distillery on the label is "dufftown distillery, dufftown, keith, banffshire". it can`t possibly be both in dufftown and keith and dufftown was definitely not in keith the last time i was there

Incidently what is a good price for a bottle of Bunnahabhain, one of my favorites
Anyway how is your Moody taking shape? hope you are on schedule.
A week tomorrow and we will be on our way west, I am really looking forward to it now, especially since last wk ends cruise.

Re: The Hijacked Thread
hi cw, - its been a while since i bought a bottle of bunnahabhain so not sure of current prices.
the moody is coming along slowly. i have obtained some gelcoat so perhaps you could repair the hull damage for me one day next week, if convenient.
glad the scuttlebutt cruise seems to have been a success again.
cheers.

for those of you with an interest and further to my above post the definitive answer has lately come from banffshire -
"The whisky is another devious ploy by Diageo to promote one of their unknown malts. Auchroisk was synonymous with IDV and was removed from the market when IDV was taken over and is no longer available under the Diageo label. I think the singleton of Dufftown is Pittyvaich, it's pretty scottish excrement anyway."
you have been warned
i didn`t know we had a spell checker on watch - the penultimate word in the quote is sh*t*

Re: Singleton of Dufftown
Well, there's an old saying that there aren't any bad whiskies: there's good whiskies and then there's better whiskies...
If my invaluable wee SMWS book hadn't gone missing in the flitting I might have been able to contribute usefully to the distillery debate, but it has so I can't.
FWIW I bought a litre of the S of D at the airport yesterday for £23 (2). I've had it before and remember it as being OK but not outstanding. I'm planning on sampling it tonight and will report back.

certainly agree with the first part so far as modern malts go.DaveS wrote:Well, there's an old saying that there aren't any bad whiskies: there's good whiskies and then there's better whiskies... ....... I've had it before and remember it as.....
" ok but not outstanding " describes it well enough.
my informant, the sage of banffshire, is a former distillery manager who does not share diageo`s vision of the future of the industry so may be displaying a touch of bias in his assessment of the product

i am presently investigating the finer points of a 12yo tormore.

Re: The Hijacked Thread
Well, I did a bit of sampling last night while watching "Question Time" which is always good for a laugh - from Lochgelly last night, of all places. Yes, earlier recollections confirmed - a "drinking" whisky rather than a "keep for special occasions" whisky.
I should have added a wee proviso to the "no bad whiskies" saying: a Scottish context is implied. I have tried a New Zealand whisky, and that was truly bad.

Nearer home, Welsh whisky is pretty evil stuff.I should have added a wee proviso to the "no bad whiskies" saying: a Scottish context is implied. I have tried a New Zealand whisky, and that was truly bad.

Re: The Hijacked Thread
I've heard of Welsh whisky, but never tried it. Not worth the experiment, then, you reckon?
I have tried a Japanese single malt - forgotten its name, but Tesco were doing a cheap deal last year, and on the basis of don't knock it till you've tried it... Well, it was a lot closer to decent malt than the New Zealand effort, but they're still not really there yet.

According to my carefully compiled/stolen SMWS cheat sheet...

Re: The Hijacked Thread
well, I've heard similar comments before and would genuinely like to try one that is, but have yet to do so. The one I did try had all sorts of accreditations, but at the end of the day just wasn't "there".hardy wrote: ...but, many Jap whiskies are pretty fine,
well I would beg to differ on that one. Some are OK - the Black Bush for instance is perfectly drinkable, but definitely not as good as the best Scotch. And then, at the other end of the market, there's Paddy which I have used to help light fires and consider that its best use.hardy wrote: most Irish whiskies could easily stand alongside whiskies from Scotland.
well yes, all whiskies before maturation have potential...hardy wrote: Cognescenti are saying that the two English whiskies have the potential to be amongst the best.
I might join you. Let me know when you find a good Indian whisky.hardy wrote:If I can buy a good Indian whisky cheaper than a good Scottish one then I'll, logicaly, buy the former.
Incidentally, I see our wee highjacked thread has been "re-positioned"

I wouldn't, I make a point of paying a bit more if required to keep jobs in Britain, I'm not that selfish that I think of me and my pocket above all other considerations.hardy wrote:If I can buy a good Indian whisky cheaper than a good Scottish one then I'll, logicaly, buy the former.
