Going to ask my wife's aunt to make me a decent Saltire.
What size would be ideal for a 30ft? boat and what material should I advice her to buy for it? she is in London so will let her get the material.

At the risk of some Old Salt ire, I would suggest no bigger than a regular small courtesy flag, since obviously you wouldn't be flying it from anwhere other than the spreaders would you?

[rant]And at the risk of further opprobrium being sent in my direction, I find it very irritating when Welsh boats visit this side of the BC, flying enormous Welsh discourtesy flags. Especially as I would get abuse if I sailed into Cardiff flying an English flag in the same position [/rant]

Depends where you intend to wear it. Wrapped round your shoulders as our gallant boys suffer yet another fitba defeat should have a fly of ~1.5m; flying from an ensign staff at the stern, about 1"/foot of boat; from the backstay while sailing up the Bristol Channel, I'd go for the biggest you can get, the natives seem quite susceptible to being wound up. Just make sure your aunt-in-law uses the right colour of blue!

Have a look to see what it's going to thrash itself to shreds on then make it just a hair smaller.
If it trails in the water in a kind of elegant old-fashioned way, that's OK.
Marisca's right about the colour, you don't want to be 'stopped in the water' do you.

What a great source of inspiration you are guys
It will be flown from just under the sb spreader as is my current one which I bought when in Campbeltown last year as I felt out of place without one, it just seems a bit on the small side, at a guess aprox 20" x 14".
Incidently should it be Royal blue or mid blue?

In a word, No: the committee recommended that the optimum shade of blue for the Saltire should be Pantone 300 (that is, 0, 114, 198 in the RGB colour model, or #0072C6 as hexadecimal web colours)

Yes, but only once the English Oil and Gas that is (inconveniently) positioned off Scotland runs out.

Incidently, since James I hasn't England always been ruled by a Scots king and his decendants? Surely England is therefore a province of Scotland???

That poll is 2.5 years old.

The 68% figure quoted actually refers to the proportion of English people polled who would like to see the establishment of an English parliament. If true and representative (and without any details of numbers polled etc. it's hard to tell) then that is surely encouraging. I've thought for a number of years now that one of the underlying reasons for English resentment of and racist bile about the Scots is that, now uniquely in the UK, England has no parliament in which to democratically debate its domestic affairs.

There is also quoted the prediction, current at the time, that the return of an SNP Scottish Government would immediately cause a constitutional crisis. Well, we've had one for a couple of years now, and we still await the constitutional crisis...
