Fenders - Let's have a heated debate.
Why do people get so het up when they see another boat with fenders out. Does it really matter? My answer to that question - NO!

Do you mean not being bothered is what's wrong, or the fact that people leave their fenders out?Nick wrote:Symbolic of everything that is wrong with our society today IMO.Does it really matter? My answer to that question - NO!

Yes.
OK, I'm one of THEM.....could be values set in the dim and distant past.
It just seems wrong to me. Unsightly, and bad seamanship, but that's just an opinion.
Then the owners wonder why "there don't seem to be as many now as when we started", and those that remain have lanyards that resemble frayed pyjama cords.
I'm mortified when I find one dangling when it should be stowed.
Having shown my colours, I now expect to be shouted at when I miss one!
Mustn't give it if I can't take it.

Would there be any excuse for someone setting out single handed and probably not able to leave the cockpit in order to get to fenders, if, say they dident have any autohelm unit etc?

I would positively encourage people to sail with their fenders out.
I've only found 6 walking the beaches down here in Wales this winter, and I don't yet have a matching set.

Ahhhhh, down here in the South we tie them to the boat. That's why we're all rich and porridgewogs(tm) are all poor!Alcyone wrote:I've only found 6 walking the beaches down here in Wales this winter, and I don't yet have a matching set.
Yes, I've been drinking...
...and I'm just jealous because you PWs(tm) all live in paradise, and I don't.
Re: Fenders - Let's have a heated debate.
Have to confess - if we're just out for an hour or two on the river eg in wintertime we don't bother stowing - for longer trips they go in the locker
