MCA - idiots

Post by Nick »

.
The Moronic Coastguard Agency have just sent us a letter telling us that Fairwinds is no longer registered as they have not received an application to renew the Certificate of Registry. Is it unreasonable of me to think that a letter PRIOR to expiry warning us might have been a more appropriate use of a stamp?

Or an EMail even?
Just had a similar dialogue over our CG66 registration, but they were very nice.

Who did you speak to about your CG66 Bill, was it CCG @ Gourock? as I want to verify that they have my MMSI tied in with the details on my CG66 registry. Thanks.

Thanks Bill.
I am registered, but what I am wondering is, last season I inadvertantly sent out a DSC alert while checking my mmsi No.
CCG answered by addressing the mmsi but never used my boat name or call sign, which I would have expected considering I am on the CG66 reg, I almost missed their reply that day but the penny dropped in due course.
I keep meaning to check with them to see if they have my mmsi on the regist.
Cheers, C_W

Funny you should not have got a reminder letter Nick, I have just renewed my registry and they sent me a reminder that it was about to expire. Given that the registry lasts for 5years I would have thought a reminder was essential for most people, I certainly would have not remembered without a reminder.

Re the registry bit.
Three of my purchases had been previously registered, but lapsed. (SSR and Part-1).
I did register as the new owner, and there was no problem reviving the old details. (as the number is for life - carved into the main deck beam - or on a wee plaque)
Current boat is Part-1, but I have no intention of refreshing the registry when it expires, until a foreign trip is planned.
In the "blue book" days, one payment was for life - barring alterations, and I feel reluctant to plough cash into the government when there is no need.
So, re-reg will become part of the planned cost of the 'big voyage' - whenever.
As for the CG66, I can access my profile, by signing in using an Email address and CG-issued password.
I don't know if this is the result of my dialogue with the CG or whether everyone has this facility.

Confirmed - I just had the closure notice of the SSR of my previous boat. No notice odf intention, just closed.
How effin stoopid do you have to be. We pay these idiots to think up wheezes like this.

Although it doesn't matter, as we sold the boat soem years ago, I will give them a telephonic rocket tomorrow for being a source of governement waste, and will (threaten) to write to the Marine press.

This reminds me of something else.

If you look at the small print on your photocard driving licence, it automaticaly expires after 10 years, the fine for driving with an expired licence is £1000. The renewal fee is £17, you do not receive notification of expiry!

But an address change is free, so all you need to do is move house and save a massive £17.. - every 10 yrs.

Not true I am afraid Bill.

I have moved twice recently, the licence comes back with the same expiry date even though it's less than six months to go.

More to the point, as far as I am aware, they do not inform you that your licence which is supposidly valid till you are 70, actualy expires after 10 years.

Yes I remember. The paper bit, which is the document describing your current (points) status lasts until you're 70.
The reason the other needs updated is purely the photo.
Didn't realise it cost that much to process though.
I think if you are stopped they ask to see the paper, so why bother with the plastic.- say you left it at home.
Or am I being stupid?
You are not driving while banned, after all.

Well, I phoned them and I can re-apply and get the same number, but they have to send me a new paper form to fill in. They said I could do it online if I registered it as a change of owner - well, I can see a potential legal minefield there, so they are sending me a piece of paper (or several) to fill in.

Useless!
