I'm thinking of sailing my 52' steel cutter around the world. What's the best way to pole out a storm jib?

Hmmm, steel eh?
You'll have to revise on Fleming's left and right hand rules, as your cutter will attempt to generate electricity due to cutting the natural gauss.
The course you take will affect polarity, so the pole will have to be adjusted to suit, otherwise an in-phase, algebraecally additional voltage - potentially capable of being measured, could be generated.
