"The West" by Ronald Faux.

Post by Windfinder »

I'm p155ed.

I've had a fine Jalfreizi. (And for the first time in yonks left a tip.)

I'm dipping into one of my Xmas pressies, "The West" by Ronald Faux published in 1982.

I actually think it's better than the current CCC and Lawrence Cruising Guides.

Discuss.

Ronnie Faux's The West is a very well written and witty account of his forays in the area, but he accurately describes it as a companion volume; he didn't intend it to be pilot guide; very readable account of his adventures (from memory he used the map in an AA gazetteer for going around Ardnamurchan).

A really great read, but not comprehensive enough to abandon the CCC Sailing Directions or Martin Lawrence. IMHO.

Sorry, I should have made it clearer that I wasn't advocating abandoning the CCC Sailing Directions or Martin Lawrence.

Finished it now.

Not so impressed with the whole as I was with a short read under the infuence of a heady cocktail of Cobra and Old Peculiar...

What's there is very well written, informative and most importantly entertaining. SOme good photos. However he really doesn't visit much and just scratches the surface. He visits some of my favorite places but misses out 90 per cent of what's there.

As Shard says - it aint a comprehensive pilot book.

Some of the descriptions are very funny - his anchoring position in Tobermory had me in stitches.Shame it's no longer in print. Well loved book.
