Hi

I've used PSK31 quite a bit. There seems to be more activity on this mode than on others.

Its very simple - which is good for me, being a simple fellow - and there is lots of free software that works well.

The bandwidth is very narrow so you can work through a lot of noise.

Only thing for me is that it seems rather impersonal, so I tend to stick to CW, the oldest digital mode of all.

Never tried pactor as I don't have the set installed on the boat - yet, but that will be rectified next year.
Be reasonable? I didn't get where I am today by being reasonable.

Ive been wanting to reply for ages but i still have very limited internet and lots to do.

France is by now the most backward country in Europe for internet.Almost no open connections.3G still costs 50€ pm (down from 69€) for one giga per month PLUS 20 euro cent PER 60 seconds inadvisable connection charge!!!!(12€ an hour extra plus huge charges for using over 1 giga)

I had an offer from a Danish provider i use for my sms 7€pm plus 2€ per day for each day logged on to a 3.5mbps connection,Spain Italy germany the UK all offer as good or better 3G not to mention Greece Turkey Palastine (paid by the eec) and many African countries France alone is reducing internet accsses.

CW is the oldest system feld hell is the second oldest communications system started in 1924?

I used to use RTTY for ages then found PSK 31 like you i found it impersonal i then tried feld hell which was and is very effective even in bad conditions the only thing that stops it is an adjacent carrier!Somone tuning or a very close CW station!!!!!

I can type away the 25 wpm fast enough once pre written messages are sent i much prefer it to PSK 31

When my pactor pc provider withdrew my "silver box"(not black) i would use feld hell to send my emails Stella would send them and copy the reply she touch types so for a few emails it worked well. She couldn't see the bottle of wine in the cockpit she did ask me once the text sloped then the technical reason came to me!

That service is down at the moment as shes deeply suspicious as to what im doing worse with whom i might be!

Next year pactor may well be a thing of the past that is still going as it is but other data options should be available using the wi-fi protocol on HF i hope.Ive tried it on uhf and its ADSL via the rig from the cockpit

The biggest advantage of data aboard feld hell in particular is the low duty cycle & that 20w is enough for good copy,on voice my signal breaks up over 30/40w op for the moment i just dont have the battery for 100/150w but with 20w never a power problem
