Hasn't the weather been lovely?

Post by sahona »

Up to Largs on Saturday, Tarbert on Sunday, Caladh on Monday, then home again to Troon on Tuesday.
Flat sea, not a drop of gin was spilled, and some sailing was actually achieved. Starry-starry night at Caladh, new pontoons arriving at Tarbert.
A long weekend was mandatory, work certainly is the curse of the leisure class, but were all the boats out there all crewed by geriatrics? I suspect some counterfeit sick-notes may well be offered later in the week...

Definatly a good boating wk end Bill.
We were in Rothesay fri night and Tarbert sat night, it was nice to have met up and spend a few hours in the company of Gordon Mc, Arthur Tom Mac Groarty and Alex, (Gordon's friend, also Tom and Alex's sons.
A few Magners was drank and a few songs sung, then bed at 05.30 sun morn, just in time to get up and sail home.
Cant wait until this wk end, Millport with the family for the fireworks, and of course a few Magners :)
Hopefully might meet some of you there.

Millport celebrates the Glasgow September Weekend, by trying to be the place for the last fling before the pubs/hotels close for the winter.
In the 60's we felt we had a duty to perform in helping to clear the shelves and barrels before the Tuesday morning.
Nowadays it's a bit more organised, with a firework display etc. but the objective is the same I think.
Brodick also used to be a favourite...
I guess the moorings will be full, but if the wind stays down, the anchoring in Kames (other side of the Eilans) is excellent.
I feel a nostalgic trip coming on! :D :D

Weather looks good for the coming weekend too although Simon has posted a caveat in another place.

Intersting to turn attention to the weekend weather and early next week and watch how subtle changes take place in the forecast over the coming days.

High pressure is still in control, but it is being sueezed south as an active low tracks northwest of Scotland, bringing some stronger winds to the north. We've still low pressure to the south and so ourt high is being squashed between the two areas.

Now, in my experience models are not great at getting the detail of forecasts correct when anticyclonic weather has been hanging around for several days. So, I expect some chopping and changing over the coming days.

Initially attention will be focused on this weekend, but the day I am interested in is Tuesday. Then the ECMWF models is developing a low east of the country with a northwesterly flow digging deep through all areas, whilst other models make less of a feature of this.

My money is on Scotland and northeast England being affected, but high pressure remaining west of Ireland, maintainging fair and mainly dry conditions for the west of the country.

We'll see how it develops, but a nice one to watch and learn how models react over the coming days.

thanks bill.
i take it the fireworks are on saturday night ?
can they be seen from anchor in the bay ?

i`ll have to work overtime to get there following the senior moment today.
this was the day to refit the rebuilt seawater pump and the refurbished pipework and the new rubber hoses. as i sank to my knees before the engine, seawater pump in hand, the stray thought occurred - " where are the ***ing pipes ?"
still sitting on top of the central heating boiler 35 miles away came the silent reply   - bu@@er.

Joe, the fireworks are usually in at the pier, and they will be lighting several candles (torches) all over the Eileens so as to make them look as if they are on fire, so dont moore too close.

Where is your boat then if the hoses are 35mile away?

Looked at the weather for this W/E. Seems to me that Lochranza tonight (Friday), Millport for the pyrostuff Saturday, Lamlash on Sunday, and the mainland on Monday would give an itinerary with gentlemens winds and sheltered anchorages.
May see some of you out and about?

Don't know about gentleman's winds, Saturday afternoon looks abit blowy. Might be a better idea to go to Cumbrae centre and get the bus round. Could be there if SWMBO has not got plans for Saturdau night. If not might meet up Sunday in Lamlash for a natter.

Hopefully I will be putting Flap's cockpit back together tomorrow (Sat) leaving enough time to get to Kames or somewhere for a scoop. Otherwise it will be me and the dog on the mooring.
Eamon... my digestive system hasn't been the same after that Magners moment. I enjoyed the music festival and, of course, the company but why doesn't someone in that god forsaken town sell proper beer?
Spyro... how is the napper? I guess you will be using the injury as an excuse for unusual eccentric behaviour, or is that usual behaviour. Regards to the missus BTW.

Gordon
The napper is much better thanks, stitches were removed during the week and I'm allowed out this weekend. Looks like I'll be heading for millport tomorrow.

I thought you were going to blame the fish supper.
Was nice to meet you all again.
