WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1700 Wednesday 25th June 2008
SATURDAY:
A brisk west to southwest flow through the country for Saturday. Low pressure is going to be to the west of Scotland and a cold front will be edging slowly eastwards through the Midlands, Wales and into southern England.
The cold front probably has some showery rain on it in the morning but this is going to be fading away. More persistent rain associated with the colluded front across northern parts of Scotland.
Elsewhere it is a case of rather a lot of cloud for many of us and plenty of dry weather around. There will be a few showers forming through central parts of Ireland and a few drifting into southwest Scotland as well.
The winds are likely to be the main feature of the weather though, being SW’ly everywhere, 15-20kt (F5-F6) through most places, but perhaps a25-30kt (F7) across western Ireland and southwest Scotland.
SUNDAY:
On Sunday the southwest flow is likely to be persisting. There will be an occluded front over northern Scotland, this moving slowly southwards. A developing low may form to the west of Scotland in the afternoon, this pushing a trough eastwards through Ireland into the afternoon. This is one to watch in the forecast over the coming days as this feature could arrive more quickly than currently predicted. The overall flow is likely to be more moist on Sunday and so the risk of showers is increased.
I think that there will be showers over western Scotland, northwest England, Wales and eastern Ireland from early on Sunday morning. For more central and eastern areas it should be dry, but it won’t be long before the showers move in. These probably being light to moderate overall and lasting into the afternoon. The far southeast of England could stay dry.
An area of heavier showers and more persistent rain, as well as stronger winds, could drift into southwest Ireland later.
Winds will be SW 12-16kt (F4-F5) for most, increasing to a SW 25-30kt (F7) over southwest Ireland in the afternoon.
