What's it like for vodafone in the likely CC08 cruise area?

Not too bad, but very localised - the signals for all the operators are extremely variable. Between us we use Vodfone, O2 (and T-Mobile for the laptop). Reception can often be surprisingly good on open water, but small communities like Balvicar get no coverage at all.

Think Vodaphone is better than Orange - as Shard says spasmodic, sporadic coverage but much improved over the past 10 years.

Based on the recording of a drunken rambling once shared with us, I would guess the latter

Hi Jools, I've often wondered about the link from Tom Eckhart for that recording. Does it still exist? If so, where...?

I never never met Tom, but instinctively felt that I knew and liked him. Still get an odd feeling when I come across some of his very funny/pointed/barbed comments in old threads. Seemed a very decent person.

Regards

It's odd how a train of thought works innit?

Only met Tom once, briefly, at tcm's boat show do last year but he made an impression and we had some fun over an anti-inspirational calendar that matt was trying to foist on one or other of us.

Would love to have the link to that recording.
