I had occasion to visit the masthead today. SWMBO facilitates this by winding me up on the anchor windlass (electric). On this boat, we have a new Lofrans which is a 'kin menace. The knurling on the drum is so grippy, that the rope can't slip sideways to make foom for the new turn, which of course starts to pile. When you're halfway to Paradise you don't need to be told to "hang on a minute" every turn of the winch.
The last boat had an ancient SL 519 with a shallow, rounded, smooth drum which never went wrong in this way. I think I'll prematurely age the new one before my next ascension.
Anyone else care to comment?

But ma whurlie wisnae, sae the frichtmeeter didnae, sae uhidtae no?
Don't consider the mast a problem,(the last one was 60'), and I can hold my own (dry) weight, but I suspect the windlass will crash a rope under any load situation, so I'll need to investigate. ( you've got the same beast I think!)

Funny that, John. I've only used the rope side for non-anchor jobs ~ like pulling boats together against the elements etc. and of course, mast-upping. It's a thought though, it may be difficult just when you need it most.
As to your other innuendo - today I must confess I am inundated with messages from muscle-groups I had totally forgotten about... which of course, will explain bouts of cramp over next weekend. Nothing to do with bloodstream contaminants, you understand...
