WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1200 Friday 18th April 2008
SATURDAY:
Low pressure dominating the weather through the day on Saturday over the southern half of the UK, but high pressure holding to the north. The result is a strong east flow with occluded fronts tied up in it.
The best of the weather will be across Scotland where the day should be dry with some good spells of sunshine. The best of the sunshine in the west, with always the risk of some low cloud drifting into the east.
Further south most of Ireland, England and Wales will have a cloudy day. There will be outbreaks of rain in the strong east wind. More persistent rain edging northwards through the Midlands during the course of the afternoon, with yet more rain reaching the Channel later.
Winds mainly E-NE 15-25kt (F5-F6) but gusting 35kt (F8) on eastern coasts at times. Nearer NE 15-20kt (F4-F5) for northern and western Scotland.
SUNDAY:
Low pressure remains in the Bay of Biscay on Sunday. Fronts are forced northwards again, with the high pressure remaining to the north of Scotland.
Probably less windy in the south through Sunday, although still cloudy with outbreaks of rain in the wind. Once again there will be some more persistent rain in places, notably running along the line of the occluded front over northern England, Wales and southern Ireland. Low cloud covers the hills.
Rain too through the Channel, moving onto southern coasts of England, and then feeding into parts of Essex and Suffolk late in the afternoon.
For Scotland there will be cloud and some spots of rain and drizzle in the east, but elsewhere it should be generally dry, although still cloudy.
Winds from the E or NE generally around 15 -20kt (F5) buit 25kt (F6) on eastern coasts. Lighter winds in northern Scotland at a ENE 12-15kt (F4).
