Not for you - for me!

The company I work for in an act of unbridled generosity, (or an attempt to avoid paying some tax - you choose! ) have set up a sailing club and offered to buy a boat!

Having been volunteered for committee duty (I was the only Englishman there, and they wanted a multinational committee ) we have to put forward a suggestion for funding.

The boat has to be suitable for the local (weekly) regatta where some semi serious racing takes place but is open to all comers, and for family holidays in the summer. Suitable for all levels, from those who have never sailed to experts.

End of spec. It will have to be new, and budget is to be approved, but unofficially up to 2 million NOK (about 175k GBP) has been rumoured. Of course, cheaper is OK too.

So - suggestions please!

Whooop! Whoooop! Now that's what I call a serious budget.

1 Where will the boat be based?
2 For the regatta - what type of boat will you be sailing against? Similar size/handicap?
3 For the above - will the 'all levels' need to be seen to have appropriate qualifications?

Boat will be based in Stavanger, Norway.

Regatta is open to all classes of boat.

Boat should be suitable for training purposes, as that is part of the plan. No official qualifications are required in Norway (yet - but it is on the way )

I am an (ex) oil related engineer with sail training experience.

I am also prepared to act as a consultant for this project for a fairly modest fee.

I've been much impressed by the OVNI range, and consider that you'd get all you want from one of these - a 385 or a 435. As an engineer, I'm sure you'll appreciate the rugged, low-maintenance structure and finish, and the sailing qualities, in a rugged sailing area.

Just a slight thread drift, but why do they insist that people are already 'oil related' ?. I've applied for a few jobs in the business but always been rejected because of that. Don't they realise that one day, there won't be anyone left that someone else has trained up ?.

I think that they are beginning to realise it now, judging from some articles I have read recently.

I went offshore in the mid 1970's, when they were screaming out for people. A lot of the guys were ex-Merchant Navy, ex-RN, ex-Fishing fleet Etc, and it was such a good job that nobody, or at least very few, left. As time went on, the average age of the workforce increased, and now many of us are retired or just about to, so there IS a shortage looming. There are certainly apprenticeships available now, but I'm not sure about "older" people. Not that you are old Dave, but you get my drift.

If it were my money, I'd go for the Najad 380, but that's a personal choice.

Not sure I would want to start another apprenticeship again at my age, but I know what you mean , at least they are realising that they're going to be in trouble if they keep on going without training up some youngsters, but it would interest me if they were after more mature people too. I am mature, honest .
