So they say, however visitors to Barcaldine will now be able to admire Silkie's very smooth red bottom just astern of Cherry Ripe's newly painted topsides in 'green so dark it's almost black'. A bit of a challenge painting over a windy weekend but from more than a few yards away it looks good and we are very happy with the results.

I hope that both of you weren't painting on the same day!!!

What did you use for the topsides? , and how did you apply it?

Was Cherry Ripe painted previously?

Cherry Ripe was professionally sprayed with Awlgrip some time before 1998. We just rubbed down the existing surface, including some less than lovely repairs and retouching. Two coats of Epifanes Monourethane applied with roller and brush gave a satisfactory finish, a third coat would probably make it look even better but we are fairly pleased. A key benefit of using a single component paint is that we can touch up the inevitable scrapes and bashes with minimal bother.

I was thinking about changing my name to Greensodarkit'salmostblack-boat but Silkie advises that will be too long.

Port side, only 1 coat but the coulour is more apparent in this light.

You did well to paint her when outside in these temperatures.

She's certainly very dark in comparison to the photos on the brokers website from when she was on sale.

An improvement, in my opinion. Hope that she doesn't mark easily and drive you daft.

I would have thought that if you were repainting anyway you might have contemplated the relationship between the colour green, reckoned to be unlucky for a boat, and the number of times the RNLI have plucked your boat and crew from certain death. Maybe the gods will be fooled by the darkness of the colour, but I doubt it!
