I decided it would be a good idea to produce a manual for ma fine shup - If I became incapacitated or departed this life, I'm not sure anyone would find it easy to understand how everything works.

Anyone else done something like this? - I secretly contacted the Webster himself to discuss a website as appears rather in vogue at present but I think I am more if a paper and pencil sort of a chap.

Yes. Mainly how the "systems" work or are wired etc. and whereabouts on the boat the various components can be found.
Just a loose leaf folder as things get modified and superseded.

Me Dad did a series of cards, it was a while ago and cards were state of the art, for systems on Seminole.
They are still valid today, apart from the systems which have broken down or changed. Many of the systems have broken down or changed.
You really need to set up a review period, say every 2 years, and asign someone to review the instructions to keep them valid.
Then you need an auditor to make sure that the reviews are carried out and recorded.
Or you could accept the fact that the knowledge dies with you and you don't really give a excrement once you have gone.

Documentation to ISO9000 is surely the minimum required? Anything less and you are in great danger.

Just as I thought of looking forward to retirement.
Perhaps there needs to be a development committee to scope out and then monitor progress and series of quality assurance meetings just to keep the project on track to the desired standards?

Mine's just inching towards BS5750 level. External influences on quality will be rigorously repulsed.

There's not much need for it to be on the web since there's not great wifi access from the boat, is there? Not always, anyway. Whatever - even if you did put it on the web, calling Nick is a bit like calling up WH Smiths to check that they have some paper in stock - it's the content that's needed first and foremost. I bet webby wil have loads of stories bout this when peeps say "let's have a webste, yeah!" and nick sez ok what you want to put up there? Got any nice stories and pix? And they say erm, well...
