Autumn's pleasant weather.....................

Never really took to August. As a child, it was the month we had to back to school so it was never quite so carefree as July. But it was also when we took our family holiday. My dad always worked the Glasgow Fair so that others in the shop could have the time off, so we'd usually head off at the beginning of August, laden with rucksacks and tents, for our annual taxi ride, a rare treat, to Buchanan Street for the MacBrayne's bus heading north.

The trouble with the month was the weather. While I have memories and family photographs of occasional fine weather, I can also remember heavily swollen and uncrossable burns, a bridge that was washed away, roads torn away by flood-water, rain so thick that there would be a fine spray between the flysheet and the inner tent, cowering from lightning, everything sodden..... Need I go on?

This year has proved to be no exception, although it is rather more comfortable on board than in a tent.

Now westlin winds and slaughtering guns
Bring autumn's pleasant weather..........

Far too optimistic. I prefer the Flanders and Swann version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eT40eV7OiI
