Would you be going west to east or vice versa?
Were you thinking coast to coast?
There is a marina at Kirkintilloch and a residential basin at Auchinstarrie Kilsyth.
You should be safe enough from the neds once you are past Maryhill area.
You could overnight at the Stables Pub between Bishopbriggs and Kirki, which is aprox 2.5 miles from my house.
Let me know if I can be of any help.

Ps there is a slip at Kirki.
I used it once a few years ago to launch my first little boat to mark the waterline.
I have travelled part of the canal in an inflatable dinghy, near end of summer, excessive weed growth but great fun.
