I've enjoyed the first episode of the repeated Sea Fever For Those in Peril but a couple of bits jarred and in particular the closing comment from Richard Woodman about the inherent hostility of nature to us - I paraphrase. In the context he is specifically referring to storms at sea and seems to regard seagoing as a battle with nature. I never imagine the sea as either hostile or even indifferent to me but rather disinterested - it is the way it is and any intelligent lifeform will have to take account of that if it hopes to prosper.

Slightly too much brandy tonight I think.

Oh I have no doubt that the sea is a sentient creature, it knows when I am setting out & prepares to ambush me with overfalls, gales & lots of waves. But when I stand on the shore & look out to sea, it deliberately disguises itself to look calmer & more benign. It reflect sunshine off the tiny ripples so that I will be tempted to sneak out of harbour where it can get me.

Oh, yes, don't ever try telling me that the sea is ignorant of my plans & intentions.

If it's anything like the stuff you brought on the last Scilly Isles cruise which did for wee James by 4am ahm surprised yer still breathing. Or, was it rum? Whatever, it wus awfy. It wus a Tesco clearance bargain erm .....
