On Tuesday the sailing ship Irene will set off from Plymouth to carry organic beer from Devon to France, olive oil from Spain to Brazil and then – all being well – bring cocoa, coffee, Amazonian "superfoods" and rum from South America and the Caribbean back to the UK.

Merely an observation old chap. I am struggling to see the point of the venture - we used to send small boys up chimneys and have children rotting their teeth by sucking cotton twines through shuttles. Similarly, it used to take 5 weeks to get to Australia, all of these and countless other ventures have thankfully been consigned to the far and distant past and may they never return. I am a supporter of ethical business practices and accept that we all have a responsibility to nurture Mother Earth throughout our time here and leave it in an improved state for the following generation, if we can. The Slow Cargo movement venture is not something that will be taken up or influence big business because the consuming public has been conditioned to expect to get their needs now, not when (and if) the boat comes in.

Pick the bones out of that you four -eyed dreamer.

I thought it was beads, knives & nails to Africa, people to the Caribbean & then rum, molasses, tobacco & sugar to Bristol or Liverpool. Used to be a lot of money in that trade after the drugs to China trade collapsed.
