My Gran's garden wall, bit of ice, green Morris Marina came whizzing round the corner and straight through it!

Not saying that. It should never have been developed in the first place. It was a quiet, peaceful place of great beauty. We went there for picnics. Remember it fondly.
Why did anyone imagine that they could/should build great big rigs in the middle of nowhere? Quite unbelievable.

Topographically it may have made sense - plenty of room and easy access to deep water - but I wonder more about the employment side of things. I can remember seeing the "Queen of Scots", chartered by McAlpine, running a shuttle service from Rothesay to Ardyne, but there surely couldn't have been as many potential employees in Tarbert and Tighnabruaich, and it's a fair step over the hills to Dunoon.

Maybe they thought they could billet the workers in a similar way to that of Sullom Voe at about the same time, carboard huts that danced in the wind, and out of work cruise ships with gangways awash. Full of guys from broken families.

Ardyne and Portavadie make a lot of sense for rig building - deep, well sheltered water close to large population of skilled workers..Easy tow out to location and no doubt large grants to get set up.

They were so keen to industrialise the 'backward' West they thoughtfully built a modern village for the workers.
It did and still has all the modern infrastructure like washing machines curtains, beds etc...
It is called Pollphail and now looks like this. Some tit in a Government Department somewhere didn't realise they (the Government) didn't own the land it was built on.
Next time you enter/leave the marina - just imagine what it was like - and then look up on the hill at the derelict village.
There really wasn't any need for it.
