A few days ago on a journey from Skye, SWMBO & I paused at the Cluanie Inn for a cup of coffee. In the loo I found a notice telling a bizarre tale. Apparently the Inn had been quite happy for its toilets to be used by non customers as well as patrons. (Highly public spirited and commendable, thought I.) A representative of Highland Council arrived and stated that this shouldn't be permitted. Non patrons should be advised to use the nearest public toilets at Kyle of Lochalsh (around 29 miles away, open part day only). The Inn requested that non customers wishing to use the toilet fill up a complaint form for forwarding to HC.

We spent some time speculating about any sensible explanation for this apparent nonsense, but couldn't come up with anything. Any ideas that might make any sense of HC's stance?

Certainly wouldn't suit me. The West Coast Bus would be awash and beginning to rust...
Bit of boring history: used to run around with a happy bunch of chaps and chapesses (didn't we all?) in the 60's in Glasgow.
Unfortunately, Davie's mum thought he was being led astray, and bought the above mentioned inn - in the middle of nowhere - and spirited Davie "Teuch" away, never to be seen again... until the funerals started. In those days the inn had a petrol pump as well as a cludgie.

Seems a strange response from Highland Council.

Perth and Kinross Council operate a Comfort Scheme, through partnerships with local service providers such as hotels, pubs and public buildings. This means that these facilities are now available for public use regardless of whether or not the user is a customer.
Follow signs for "Publicly Available Toilets".

Visiting Plockton in July we had lunch in the Plockton Inn where a steady stream of people came in to use their facilities. They were paid by the Council to offer this service as the public loos had been shut. System that appeared to be working well.

Petrol pump was still there and working on Friday.

Hotel toilets in Plockton were nothing special. They were clean, plenty of soap, towels etc which is all one needs. In fact if you are desparate you would go anyway!

That could explain why the Council might be unwilling to recommend or sponsor them, but not why they would prevent non-patrons from using them. If there was a quality problem, why were they OK for customers to use?

Is it possible this tale has become garbled in the telling?

The Cluanie's toilets are clean and fully equipped.

I hope I haven't "garbled" the story, I'm quoting to the best of my recollection from the notice that the Inn has posted in the toilets.

I used to stop at the Cluanie both ways travelling from Kyle to Aberdeen.
Coffee and breakfast one way, beer and crisps the other.

Was also a resident at Plockton Hotel after being turfed out of the Rev Lamonts B&B for being unsuitable.
