I crave the forum's indulgence. I am stuck at home with a severe case of post-WHYW lurgy / man-flu / or something similar, bad enough that day-time television is almost (but not quite) acceptable viewing. In this depleted physical and mental state I have foolishly attempted to follow, and even got annoyed enough to post on, idiotic Colregs threads on TOP - you know the kind of thing - "I ignore the rules and always turn and run away when I see a ship - it's safer" etc.

Our forum-meister Nick has been dragged, or maybe he leapt voluntarily, into these threads and is trying to educate the idiots as to the error of their ways, a task that he must have known was a lost cause from the outset and could only lead to frustration and choler. I feel I have an excuse but what is wrong with Nick? Is he ill, suffering withdrawal symptoms, totally depressed by the weather? With an exciting trip to Troon in the offing why is he expending any energy at all on people, who if Darwin was right, are doomed to extinction? Please could someone in the Balvicar area, or Troon if he gets there, counsel the poor soul or at least buy him enough alcohol to calm him down? Or maybe like Rocinante's rider, he needs to be tilting at something (go on - google it and appreciate my attempt at wit).

I feel that is an original question and as such, with some refinement and development, could attract research funding leading, possibly, to acceptance to undertake a Phd. The University of Lancaster would, I am sure be interested and I would be happy to act as your supervisor as you refine your question and outline your research methodology.

You may stand on, convinced of your rights if you wish. I will happily duck round behind large steamers & keep safely out of their way. Despite your fearfull predictions I doubt it will ever make me a suitable example of Darwinianism in action as it has helped keep me alive for at least the last 50 years of sea sailing.

I almost resisted entering the TOP fray and have no intention of getting into a similar discussion here. Do as you feel is right and proper and I shall do the same. It would appear that neither of us have bounced off a large ship in similar spans of time - well, not yet anyway.

Looks like the same one. As well as its famous activities, it also took fare paying passengers for a trip doon the watter. As its skipper allegedly said, "This might just be sewage to you, but it's my bread and butter."

Dear, oh dear, what a silly fuss.

I take it that it's a quiet night up there tonight then. Sorry about that, but glad to provide some small entertainment. It's a grand old word Steamers, but as it happens, I prefer the Italian word "Vaporetti" which is also applied to diesel vessels. But, pedants one & all, I wish you luck - and at least it has cut short a pointless circular fight about whether to jump in front of them or sneak round behind them.
