Scotlands Census

Just been onto the helpline for advice about the 2011 census..
I explained to the wee girl that we live full time on a yacht and don’t have any property, and we use our daughters address for mail etc, she told me that there is a part on the form that covers temporary address like caravans, I told her this is not temporary it is our permanent accommodation and that we move around quite a bit....
So off she went for more advice.... back she came asking where the boat is at the moment, so I told her and gave her the post code for the marina, apparently some one visits all post codes looking for people like us..... So as I understand it someone is going to drive round all marinas and moorings, identify which boats are liveaboards and give them a form.
I wonder how he will know.... :?

I guess I just wait and see

He won't care. Just think about it for a bit. Being paid to drive around all Scotland's marinas & harbours in the Spring, on full mileage allowance & subsistence rate. He will be able to buy a new car by the summer. AND, he won't need a holiday either.

If It was my job, I'd take the missus, or perhaps that pretty little flighty red-haired CA from the print office. :D

Oh that it were the case. Some poor enumerator - already footsore and losing her voice from explaining to everyone she actually manages to contact - will have avoided the dog who sunk it's teeth into her leg and she will have told you to use the envelope provided or filed online. Census enumerators got a flat fee of £80 20 years ago and not much more in 2001.

Question H7 says describes A mobile or temporary structure as 'A caravan, or other mobile or temporary structure'.

So you are another mobile structure - just the same as canal boat users, boat crews tied up unloading and waiting for the tide. Basically give your address as on the night of 27th March 2011. That way in 100 years' time your descndents can find you on the census and carry on looking up their family tree and say 'look - that's when our family first started living full-time on boats'

Well after the good Lady MacD got onto it, we are now getting the census sent to Orla, and Orlas address is fine.
We have also managed to use Orlas address here for the electrol register... :D

So the good news is the enumerator wont have to venture onto storm battered pontoons (40+kn form the NE, rare appairently, but dont want another evening like it) at Dunstaffnage and hunt out the liveaboards.

Starting to feel like we belong again, dont know if thats a good thing though.
Well at least until we move on again :D

"A caravan, or other mobile or temporary structure"

What a disgraceful description or classification of Orla. I do hope that you are writing to your MP to complain.

Yes I agree, but also quite proud that we live in a way that does'nt meet the norms.....

Even my occupation does'nt seem to exist, when filling out forms on the internet eg insurance there is always a drop down menu with a long list of occupations, none of which I can select, so I end up being classed as "other"

I used to have a wee saying at the bottom of all my posts on SB & PBO .... "why fly with the crows when you can sore like an eagle"

Why is your eagle sore? Is it because he can't soar? :tiphat:

Its not my fault this forum can't supply a spell check for illiterate peeps like myself....
My other failsafe spell checker was away shopping in Oban....

Is that not how Americans spell Soar?

Lady Mac is very embarresed and is making me do 100 lines :chalk:

Not to bad, thank you, I can move my foot a little now, so I am hoping it is healing, but it is a long slow process & my toes get bloody cold cos I can't wear a shoe & sock on that foot. :violin: April 13th for next check over - but they will probably just renew the cast. :(

The trouble with spell checkers is that they can only tell you if the spelling is write and have nothing to say about whether the rite word has been used.
