The ongoing campaign to save the coastguard stations and emergency towing vessels at Lerwick and Stornoway has received official backing from the Northern Joint Police Board and the Highlands and Islands fire board. They have written jointly to the MCA in suppport of the councils' demands that the stations be retained on safety grounds.

It is a pity that the online yachting community has not seen fit to give its full backing to the abovementioned campaign. Those of you who have followed threads elsewhere will know what - and who - I mean.

So back in 2009 the good ship Marisca was exiting the Caledonian Canal and the skipper thought it was a good idea to lodge a passage plan with the CG just in case we got lost on the way to Port Edgar. Aberdeen CG seemed a tad phased by the concept of a passage plan but repeated "Clachnaharry to Port Edgar" and the other details, then rather spoiled it by asking me to report in when we had cleared the Pentland Firth!
