Down in darkest Staffordshire today, I reversed onto my drive in the dark & just missed the cleared bit. The car is now stuck there front wheels spinnning merrily as it slides backwards towards the garage. And (like the bloody Council) we are out of salt. I may try a kettle of hot water in the morning but will have to be quick before it freezes. Other choices are hot ashes or SWMBO pushing, but she probably won't get much grip either in her slippers.

No, she has a Dressing gown to match her curlers - Do you think we are from Liverpool or summat? Oh, err well, actually we are. But I don't make her dress in sacking any more.

Well you should be able to inch forward using carpet under the driving wheels.
I am not sure that using Mrs A's dressing gown will win the heart of your dear Lady.

Don't use water, that'll make it worse. get a few old bits of rope and tie them round the wheels in lieu of snow chains, be interested how you get on, cos I've often thoughy of it but never tried it

I once did this to a motorbike but it's a lot easier with spoked wheels.

I went to watch The Ospreys play rugby against Cardiff last Friday. Parked on a long steep hill. During the game, it snowed heavily, and when we got back to the car, there was an inch of snow on the hill. Started the engine as a car came careering down the hill and smacked into a house at the bottom. I tried to turn and started slipping. Another car slid down the hill into the first.

I managed, with the help of two guys pushing, to reverse up the hill and then drove across the top and down a less steep incline.

I was still shaking when I got home three hours later.

Ashes work well. Ordinary sand is OK too. Take off very gently in second and slip the clutch.

Sadly I have to report that it snowed last night and made the close less slippery. Sadly because some drunken thieving little scrote stole our car at three o'clock this morning and managed to get it out of the close (wrecking the neighbours' fences on the way). If it hadn't snowed he would almost certainly have woken us up spinning the wheels.

He got less than a mile down the road before wrecking it. The car is not worth a lot, so claiming on the insurance is going to be pointless as we have a full no-claims bonus. It had only done 56k though and was good for another year or two, so we are not well pleased.

If anyone has or knows of a cheap reliable motor please drop me a PM.

It always amazes me that some people seem to think they have a right to help themselves to whatever they want. I had the garage broken into last year and a bunch of fishing tackle taken, including a box of @ 200 flies tied by the old gentleman that introduced me to fly fishing when I was a youngster - priceless. Fortunately, the bag was handed in after being found in a garden and I got the flies back.

Unfortunately, we just got rid of Carolines car, as it was never being used - sods law I suppose.

I wouldn't mind so much if the little sh1t could drive, at least then we might have got the vehicle back in one piece. I hope that whoever he is he is feeling very rough, sore and stupid this morning.

Looks like our carbon footprint is going to get even smaller for a while
