There are plenty of other ways to contribute to the RNLI, but very few BlueMoment collecting tins on the bars of Scotland. Very few old ladies leave us their inheritance either, even if we offer to name a web page after them.

Ok then, I have been thinking about having a bit of a "boating library" nothing fantastic, just a few boaty books, it'll be a good thing to suggest to them folks as don't know what to buy for "the man who has everything" like as wot I have.

I have all the Arthur Ransome books, I was thinking more accounts of voyages rather than fictional stuff. Read Para Handy, but that's not fiction is it?

So what's the first 5 to get hold of (via Amazon of course)?

Thanks Nick. I was looking at some books this afternoon and forgot to look at Amazon. Order now placed, I've saved about a tenner and Bluemoment gets its cut as well!

I can thoroughly recommend RKJ (A World of my own).
I came across it years ago, in a cabin offshore and it planted the seed ..................

Ok, I think you need a definitive one from each genres.

So I reckon you need:

1) Anything by HW Tillman - (Sea Adventure cruising).
2) Last Grain Race - Eric Newby - (tall ship)
3) Joshua Slocum - "Sailing Alone Around the World" - (First RTW and wonderfully written)
4) "Adrift" - By Steve Callahan - (Sea survival) - Alternatively Baileys or Robertsons
5) "A World of My Own" Robin Knox-Johnston
6) "Ice Bird" David Lewis (Cold cold cold)
7) One of anything by Moitessier (Soul sailing prose) whoever translates from the French has a woderful way with Words.
8) "Magic of the Swatchways" Maurice Griffiths

Sorry - I couldn't get it down to five! If two really have to be ditched then 8) & 2) should be the first to go!

Personally I'd avoid Sir Alec Rose and Francis Chichester. I thought both were a bit boring - a lot of lists of what they ate and drank and what sails they used. On the other hand they are pretty definitive!

I said 5 books to get started so I have a few diesel/beer tokens left to enjoy getting to the boat and sailing, but the more the merrier in the long run.

I read and really enjoyed this book - a true tale of an epic journey in a small boat in the southern ocean. Recommended.
