Son has just passed his test and needs a cheap car (£500 - £600 sort of range) in mid-size (Focus, Mondeo, Pug 306, VW Jetta spring to mind, maybe an old Nissan Primera? - reliability is the main criterion). If anyone has such a thing kicking about they want rid of or any non-facetious suggestions please let me know.

(Scotland only pls - son is in Aberdeen).

I've had some good eals on eb@y in recent years, if you know how do do so safely. I bought the missis a new one about three months back, mind, and could not get over how few 'bargains' there seemed to be about. I think folk may be hanging on to their cars as times are tough.

Ended up with a nice little diesel citroen xsara for £600. Poor man's peugeot. Lovely little car, though.

Good luck.

Have a look in Scot-Ads, or perhaps Thanestone on a Monday or Thursday night.

I find http://www.autotrader.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; quite useful. Using the search facility you can start with say a price range, then maybe distance from where you are, and gradually close in on what you want. It's worked for me a few times now.

Too late . . .

He's bought a 2l Vauxhall Vectra with 130k on the clock.

It was black and he looked at it in the dark. Had a Kenwood CD player though apparently.
