Musical Question

This week I have been mainly listening to Jimi Hendrix.
On the rather fine BBC Sessions, Alexis Korner introduces Noel Redding on an 8 string bass guitar. Now I know that some of you are musically inclined - has anybody heard/played/know of anybody else who played an 8 string bass?

Apparently, according to my fanatical bass player son, that John Paul Jones (ex Led Zep) also was a regular 8 string, and Victor Wooten (SMV and Flecktones)
Others have dabbled, like Jon Entwhistle and Mike Rutherford, but I guess you would expect that.

Watched the Cream reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall on Sky Arts last night (from 2005). They can certainly still play tho the vocals suffer a little. Jack Bruce was playing a fretless bass.

I never knew that JPJ had played an 8 string bass - although I am a massive Zeppelin fan.
I have the CD of the 2005 Cream stuff, I couldn't afford the concert and all that entailed, and although I really enjoy it I feel it lacks a little of the raw excitement of the original stuff.

How's it strung?- Octaves like a regular 12 string, or extended scale to take in guitar notes?
Just out of interest you understand.

Nothing recreates the feeling of live stuff. Anything done well that's live is definitely worth watching..
