Unfortunately, I didn't use him last time so all the fault-finding and subsequent work is up to me.

I used Paul Jeffes, and was very happy. He phoned me to discuss his survey, and then sent a good written report.

Cant tell the difference between a sloop and a cutter for one thing.

I have some thoughts on surveyors. These are in part shaped by an experience with one in particular.

I had a previously owned boat for sale and the first to view it made an offer – subject to survey. The surveyor duly came and surveyed. No issues with the boat except he said it had osmosis and required stripping and epoxying at an estimated cost of £5k.

This was based on one small patch of “blistersâ€Â

olive - i didn`t use a surveyor when purchasing as the sum involved was fairly small but i quite agree with your sentiments having had a similar sort of experience when selling. unfortunately it`s a bit of a necessary evil when buying a bit further up market.

now just need to find the cash deep

I have only ever had one survey done, when I bought Mistral so I have nothing to compare with, and didn't have the benefit of the experience of this forum.

At the time, I spoke to Survey One, can't remember how I made my choice.

At one point in my search for a boat, I went to look at a Twister in Fairlie and I'd asked around for recommended surveyors. Survey One came out as the tops from some very knowledgeable people. As it turned out, it never got to the survey stage, so I don't have any first hand knowledge, but I'd trust those who gave me the recommendation implicitly.

i`ve spoken to mr mcilraith todayand got some good advice so will now proceed to let the crew have another look at the target so she can re-assure herself we are doing the right thing before starting negotiations to buy.
